Dr Jackson qualified in 2003 in London and moved to Birmingham to complete specialist training in geriatric medicine and general internal medicine in 2007, gaining his certificate of completion of training (CCT) in 2012. During his training he was active in the British Geriatrics Society and was chair of the BGS.

He was awarded a joint Age UK-Research into Ageing Fund and British Geriatric Society Clinical Fellowship in 2012 with a project identifying dementia in older patients presenting to hospital with delirium. From this he validated informant tools to diagnose unrecognised dementia in patients with delirium as well as investigating the immune and inflammatory effects of delirium. Other areas of research interest include acute sarcopenia and frailty and the recognition of delirium in specialist settings such as military medicine.

He is a current of The European Academy for Medicine of Ageing, an Advanced Postgraduate Course in Geriatrics. Clinically he works as a visiting consultant at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham in ortho-geriatrics (orthopaedic liaison) and in acute general medicine.
