Professor Thomas Bieber, who was born in and grew up in France, started his studies in medicine and biology at the University Louis Pasteur in Strasbourg, France. He trained in the dermatology, allergy, and dermatopathology departments of Strasbourg (1982-1985) and then Munich (Germany). He also trained in drug regulatory affairs, earned a Master’s degree, and got special expertise in preclinical and clinical drug development. He was a recipient of the distinguished Heisenberg Fellowship from the German Research Council (DFG). Since 1997, Professor Bieber has been the chair and director of the department of dermatology and allergy at the University of Bonn in Germany.

He is with the department of dermatology and allergy at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-University in Bonn. From 2002-2006, he was vice-dean and then dean of the medical faculty. In addition to clinical dermatology and allergy, his scientific focus is on the ontogeny and immunobiology of dendritic cells and their role in atopic dermatitis (AD) and in tolerance mechanisms. He has received many awards, including the Karl-Hansen-Award of the DGAI, the Pharmacia International Research Award, and the Gold Medal of the Foundation for Allergy Research in Europe. He is a member or honorary member of national and international societies and the German National Academy of Sciences (Leopoldina). He is the author or co-author of more than 450 papers and book chapters. He has edited books on AD and more recently on stratified medicine. He is chief editor of Allergy, the official journal of the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, and a member of several editorial boards of national and international journals.
