Thomas Bartel, MD, is the Section Head of Interventional Cardiology within the Heart & Vascular Institute at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi. Prior to joining Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, Dr. Bartel was Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Duisburg- Essen and Innsbruck Medical University. Previously, he had a research stay at Tufts Medical Center in Boston and worked later at West-German Heart Centre in Essen.

Dr. Bartel has completed more than 13,000 heart catheter procedures, more than 6,000 of which were interventional. He also directed an academic echocardiographic laboratory earlier in his career and introduced intracardiac echocardiography as a guiding tool in interventional cardiology as one of the first users worldwide.

Dr. Bartel is one of the world’s leading experts in the field of periprocedural echocardiographic guidance. He has been primary operator in more than a thousand catheter-based procedures for treatment of structural heart diseases and directed The Adult Congenital and Structural Heart Disease Program at Medical University Innsbruck where he was affiliated between 2004 and 2014.

He has been involved in acute care of myocardial infarction for the last 15 years. As a cardiologist and clinical scientist, Dr. Bartel has been continuously publishing articles in high-ranking international journals and edited a textbook on echocardiography together with his spouse, who is a non-invasive cardiologist. He also serves as a member of the editorial boards of scientific journals, such as the Editorial Board of the European Heart Journal.

Dr. Bartel graduated and specialized at Charité Medical School in Berlin. Dr. Bartel currently resides in Abu Dhabi. He has two adult sons living in Austria. His wife works at Innsbruck Medical University.
