Thomas Ambrosi PhD, MS

Dr. Thomas Ambrosi is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at UC Davis. He holds a German engineering diploma (Dipl.Ing.) from TU Berlin and a master’s degree in Bioengineering from Dongseo University, South Korea. His well-recognized research on the developmental origin and function of bone marrow adipose tissue earned him a PhD from the University of Potsdam, Germany. Initially supported by a two-year postdoctoral scholarship from the German Research Foundation, he conducted his postdoctoral training in the lab of Dr. Charles Chan at Stanford University under the co-mentorship of Drs. Irv Weissman and Mike Longaker, where he later received a prestigious NIA/NIH K99/R00 Award.

Dr. Ambrosi’s research aims to delineate skeletal stem cell (SSC) diversity and niche composition in mice and humans to eventually identify novel molecular targets of endogenous stem cell communication, specifically between skeletal and hematopoietic lineages. Previous and ongoing work has comprehensively investigated SSC biology during development as well as how alterations in the SSC compartment drive aging and oncogenic malignancies by cell-autonomous processes and multi-stem cell system crosstalk. His lab’s most recent efforts include the identification of a novel brain-bone signaling axis and age-related changes in bone-gut communication.
