Dr Thomas Alexander is head of the division 2 "Products and Work Systems" at the Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. From 1994 to 2019, he worked in various positions at the Fraunhofer Institute for Communication, Information Processing and Ergonomics (FKIE), with his final position as head of the Human Factors department.

He has been a member of diverse national and international committees on research and technology, such as digital human modeling and digital factory, Virtual/Augmented Reality, mobile access to information, exoskeletons and Artificial Intelligence. In 2004 and 2005, he spent the academic year as a visiting scientist/postdoc at NASA Ames Research Center in the USA. As a member of the steering committee of the International Ergonomic Association (IEA), he is responsible for Science, Technology and Practice (STP). Dr Thomas Alexander completed his Master's degree and his PhD in engineering at the faculty of safety engineering at Bergische Universität Wuppertal.
