Thomas A. Abbott PhD, MBA

Tom Abbott leads the global Real World Evidence function at Astellas. In this role, Tom is accountable for building Astellas’s capabilities to leverage the emerging healthcare information ecosystem across the Medical and Scientific Functions at Astellas. This involves identifying and acquiring data assets across the globe, and working with external groups to improve the health data landscape, as well as the design and conduct of Real World Data studies in support of Astellas Development, Medical Affairs and Pharmacovigilance.

Prior to joining Astellas, Tom held a wide range of leadership roles across the industry. At HCL Technologies, Tom was Vice President Global Solutions, Life Sciences; at Johnson & Johnson, as Head, Healthcare Informatics for Medical Devices and Diagnostics; at Optum he held roles of SVP Analytics & Data Strategy, SVP Advanced Analytics, President I3-PharmaInformatics; Wolters Kluwer (now Symphony Health Analytics) as VP Brand Analytics; Thomson-Medstat (now Watson Health Analytics) as VP Pharmaceutical Information Products & Services; and Merck as Senior Director Outcomes Research & Management, and Financial Evaluations & Analysis.

Tom began his career as Assistant Professor of Economics and Finance at the Graduate School of Management, Rutgers University. Tom completed his Ph.D. in Economics at Harvard University, a Post Doc in Health Services Research at Yale School of Medicine and an MBA from the Wharton School.

Tom has over 40 publications in scholarly journals and books, and over 140 abstracts and conference presentations covering a wide range of topics including research methods, population screening programs, treatment effectiveness, and productivity measurement.
