Thierry Carrel MD

Thierry Carrel was born in 1960 in Freiburg. After graduating from the College of St. Michael, he studied medicine in Freiburg and Bern. This was followed by the state examination in 1984 and the doctorate in 1985. This was followed by training as a specialist in general surgery FMH in Basel, Bern and Saanen and a cardiovascular and vascular surgery under the direction of Prof. Marko Turina at the University Hospital Zurich with special consideration of surgery in newborns and infants.

He habilitated in 1993 for the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery at the University of Zurich and received the FMH specialist title for cardiac surgery in 1994. This was followed by stays abroad in Hanover and Paris (1994-1995), Helsinki (1995) and Baltimore (1999). Between 1996 and 1999, Thierry Carrel worked as a senior physician at the University Hospital for Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery at the Inselspital Bern under the supervision of Prof. Ulrich Althaus.
