Dr. Gernsheimer is director of the UW Medical Transfusion Service and a UW professor of medicine in the division of hematology. She has expertise in transfusion therapy of hematologic malignancy, as well as, surgical bleeding. Her clinical and research interests include immune platelet disorders and thrombocytopenia.
Dr. Gernsheimer earned her bachelor's degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo and her M.D. from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. She did an internship and residency at the New England Deaconess Hospital in Boston and came to the UW as a fellow in hematology.
After nearly 10 years in private practice, Dr. Gernsheimer returned to the UW and the Puget Sound Blood Center to direct the clinical and education programs in transfusion medicine and to continue her research in thrombocytopenia.
