Terrence R. Stanford is an electrophysiologist whose research involves recording the activity of single neurons to understand the neural mechanisms that govern interactions between sensation, cognition, and action. Together with his close collaborator, computational neurobiologist Emilio Salinas, Ph.D., the lab’s focus has been on understanding how vision guides one’s choice of when and where to look. Perhaps more than any other decision mechanism, visually-informed oculomotor choices unfold extremely rapidly during natural behavior. Their work employs a variety of urgent decision/choice tasks in concert with a biologically-inspired computational framework to test key predictions about how the brain instantiates this dynamic process. Their work has implications for understanding fundamental cognitive processes such as attention, impulse control, and working memory.
