Terho Heikkinen attended medical school at the University of Turku, Finland, where he received his MD (1984), PhD, and Docent degrees and specialized in Pediatrics and Pediatric Infectious Diseases. He defended his thesis entitled “Development and Prevention of Acute Otitis Media in Children” in 1994. Having received the European Society for Paediatric Infectious Diseases Fellowship Award, he then worked in 1996-98 as a Research Fellow at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, USA. Subsequently, he held a position as a Senior Clinical Researcher funded by the Academy of Finland. He is currently Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Turku and a Consultant in Pediatrics at Turku University Hospital.
