Terese C. Hammond MD is an assistant professor of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine at USC. She has multiple leadership roles, including medical director of the USC Sleep Center and fellowship director of the Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine training programs. She balances her teaching responsibilities with her outpatient practice, which focuses on all facets of sleep medicine. Her research interests include non-traditional therapies for sleep apnea and she has cultivated campus-wide collaborations with innovators at the Viterbi School of Engineering, Marshall Business School, Children’s Hospital LA and departments of otolaryngology, psychiatry/psychology and neurology

Born in England, but raised in southern Indiana, Dr. Hammond took a circuitous route to medicine. She attended Indiana University, then worked as a stockbroker prior to enlisting as a combat medic in the United States Army. She completed her bachelor’s at the Missouri University S&T prior to graduating with honors from the University of Missouri—Columbia School of Medicine in 2000. She received her training in pulmonary, critical care and internal medicine at Boston University, graduating in 2007.

She developed a research interest in sleep during fellowship, but her clinical sleep practice evolved as she developed increasing appreciation for sleep’s profound effect on overall health. She built a dynamic clinical sleep practice in Boston before joining USC in 2012. She belongs to a number of professional societies including Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA), American College of Chest Physicians, Association of Pulmonary Critical Care Program Directors and the American Thoracic Society.
