Tarek Hassanein, MD, is a board-certified gastroenterologist and transplant hepatologist who specializes in liver disease. He provides care to patients at Southern California GI and Liver Centers, a clinical services collaborator of UC San Diego Health. Dr. Hassanein focuses his practice on the management of viral hepatitis, fatty liver disease, cirrhosis, and care of patients before and after liver transplantation.Dr. Hassanein serves as the medical director of outreach services for the Liver Transplant Program Outreach Services at UC San Diego Health.

Before joining Southern California GI and Liver Centers, Dr. Hassanein was director of the Liver Center at UC San Diego Health.He is fellow of the American College of Physicians, American College of Gastroenterology, and the American Gastroenterological Association.Dr. Hassanein earned his medical degree from Alexandria University in Egypt. He completed his residency in internal medicine at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. He completed a research and clinical fellowship in gastroenterology, hepatology, and transplantation at the University of Pittsburgh.
