Tanya Smith MN, NP

Tanya Deurvorst Smith graduate of Queen's University and the University of Toronto, Tanya Smith is a nurse practitioner and co-director of the Suspected Child Abuse and Neglect (SCAN) program at The Hospital for Sick Children, where she has worked since 1993. As a Nurse Practitioner and Pediatric Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE-P), she provides medical assessments for children and adolescents who have been sexually abused or assaulted. Ms. Smith serves as the director of the Lotus Health Clinic, a medical and mental health clinic for children and youth who have been or are at risk of being sex trafficked. Ms. Smith is the co-author of the recently published article "Multisector Community Response to Child Sex Trafficking." Ms. Smith is actively involved with the Boost Child and Youth Advocacy Center in Toronto as a member of the co-management team and medical provider.

She provides leadership, consultation, and training in pediatric sexual assault and abuse at the Ontario Network of Sexual Assault Care Centers. She has trained medical and mental health clinicians, law enforcement officers, and child protection workers across the country on pediatric sexual abuse and assault. Ms. Smith has testified in court and qualified as an expert witness in the medical assessment of child and adolescent sexual abuse and assault. Ms. Smith is a course developer and instructor at the British Columbia Institute of Technology. Ms. Smith is an adjunct lecturer at the Lawrence Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing, University of Toronto, in the Nurse Practitioner program.
