Prof Gamaliel Tan is the Head of the Division of Spine Service in JurongHealth Campus. He is a Senior Consultant practising in Ng Teng Fong General Hospital and Jurong Medical Centre. Prof Tan graduated from the National University of Singapore in 1995. He completed his orthopaedic training in Singapore and obtained his FRCS (Edinburgh) in 2004. He went on to do a clinical fellowship in spine surgery at the University of Toronto, Toronto Western Hospital from 2006 to 2007. He then returned to work in Singapore in Tan Tock Seng Hospital as an orthopaedic spine surgeon.

In 2010, Prof Tan joined JurongHealth Campus and set up a new orthopaedics department in Alexandra Hospital in preparation for the then-upcoming Ng Teng Fong General Hospital. His main interest is in spine surgery, whereby he manages a variety of spinal conditions covering degenerative, traumatic, infective, deformity and tumour cases. Adj A/Prof Tan is also the Chief Medical Informatics Officer (CMIO) of JurongHealth Campus and was instrumental in the procurement and implementation of the first Epic electronic medical record (EMR) system in Singapore. He also set up the organisation’s Medical Informatics department, which is responsible for the deployment and maintenance of the paperless electronic medical record system. In addition, Adj A/Prof Tan is involved in undergraduate teaching in his appointment as an adjunct staff of the National University of Singapore. He sits on the RAC (Orthopaedics), which oversees the orthopaedic residency programme in Singapore. He is also involved in research in his collaboration with the National University of Singapore and has publications in the field of spine tumours and cervical spondylotic myelopathy.
