Dr. Tan Eng Huat has been actively involved in clinical research since his return from HMDP in 1995. He did his HMDP at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio in the United States in thoracic oncology and head and neck cancer. Dr. Tan is the Lead Principal Investigator Translational Cancer Research (TCR) flagship program grant awarded by the National Medical Research Council (S$9 million over 3 years). This is a national effort to coordinate a streamlined and integrated cross-cluster program in translational and clinical research in lung cancer that will bring Singapore forward in this field. Prior to being the PI from this large national TCR flagship grant, Dr. Tan has been the Principal Investigator of multiple national grants, securing more than $5 million in total funding.

Over the last 20 years as a Principal Investigator (PI), Eng Huat together with his co-principal investigators has expanded the lung and head and neck cancer translational research program from purely clinical trials to now including bed-to-bench research encompassing molecular pathology, signaling, and cell biology. His work on the gender differences amongst Asian non-smoker lung cancer patients provided the first clues to our current understanding of the molecular basis for these differences. He has designed, led, and collaborated on over 50 local and international multi-center clinical trials with distinction culminating in over 80 publications in top-tier journals such as Nature Medicine, Journal of Clinical Oncology, Lancet Oncology, New England Journal of Medicine, and Clinical Cancer Research amongst others.
