Professor Tam is responsible for maternal medicine and high-risk obstetrics in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. He is currently the secretary of the Maternal-fetal medicine subspecialty board, the convener of the GDM working group (under COC) for the standardization of screening, diagnosis, and management of gestational diabetes mellitus and coordinator to update HKCOG guideline for GDM. He is also the principal investigator for a territory-wide gestational age-specific thyroid function reference range delegated by COC (O&G) and COC (Chemical Pathology).

His research interests are Gestational diabetes, thyroid disorder, hypertensive disorder, thromboembolism and another area in Obstetric medicine and high-risk pregnancy. His Doctor of Medicine (MD) thesis is on the long term effect of maternal gestational diabetes on mothers and their children. He is now the study center (Hong Kong) PI of HAPO follow up study which is supported by NICHD & NIH.

He is now working with a team of local collaborators including nutritionists (dietitians), cardiologists, endocrinologists, pediatricians, microbiologists and chemical pathologists in developing cohort to assess pre-conception, periconception, pregnancy health and their impact to the offspring’s long term health. The team has collaborated with international experts and institutions on epigenetics, environmental pollutants, and microbiome.
