Tad Funahashi, MD joined Kaiser Permanente Southern California Region, Orange County, in 1992. In 1998, Dr. Funahashi was named assistant area medical director for Kaiser Permanente Orange County, and in 2000, he accepted the position of Southern California regional chief of Orthopedic Surgery. Dr. Funahashi’s dual roles still enable him to maintain a busy clinical practice and serve on multiple orthopedic contracting groups, negotiating and developing Kaiser Permanente Implant Registries. Dr. Funahashi also chairs three Kaiser Permanente committees: The National Chiefs of Orthopedic Surgery; the Interregional Implant Registry Committees; and the Annual Orthopedic Symposium. Since 2004, Dr. Funahashi has served as a Clinical Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at University of California Irvine’s College of Medicine. His passion for teaching is further evidenced by his previous tenure as a Visiting Assistant Professor at UCLA Division of Orthopedic Surgery and as a Clinical Instructor at the Department of Orthopedic Surgery, University of California, San Diego.

Dr. Funahashi graduated from University of California at Los Angeles, School of Medicine in 1986. He began teaching shortly after completing his internship in orthopedic residency in 1991 at UCLA, when he joined the faculty at the UCLA Department of Orthopedic Surgery while completing a sports medicine fellowship with Dr. Dale Daniel. For the past nine years, Dr. Funahashi has been a recipient of the America’s Top Doctors Award from Consumer Research Council of America. Dr. Funahashi has given more than 50 presentations across the county and in Hong Kong, and has authored numerous papers in publications such as the Journal of Pediatric Orthopedics, Orthopedic Transactions, and the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery. His civic activities include membership in various associations including the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery; American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine; International Cartilage Repair Society; California Orthopedic Association; American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons; and the Orange County Medical Association.
