Dr. Taco J. Blokhuis has been working as a Trauma Surgeon at the MUMC + since 2016. After his medical exam in Amsterdam, he obtained his PhD cum laude in Amsterdam in 2001 on fracture healing. In the same year he started his training as a surgeon and in 2007 and 2008 did a further training as a Trauma surgeon at the UMC Radboud in Nijmegen. He then worked at UMC Utrecht for 7 years before ending up in Maastricht. His area of interest is the non-healing fracture, or non-union. This is his spearhead in both research and patient care. Since the beginning of 2020, he has started a multidisciplinary non-union consultation hour, where various specialists jointly assess and treat these complex problems.
Dr. Blokhuis's lines of research focus in particular on various aspects that are important to non-unions; prevention, treatment and rehabilitation. Optimal fracture treatment is essential for the prevention of non-unions, but which factors exactly play a role in this? This is investigated, among other things, on the basis of laboratory research. Various options can be used in the treatment of non-unions. The aim of the research in this line is to see which strategy works best. After non-union surgery, rehabilitation is an essential factor. This is also one of the subjects of his research. With these lines of research he is a leader at home and abroad. He is a regular speaker at national and international conferences and is a co-founder of the European Society for Tissue Regeneration in Orthopedics and Traumatology (ESTROT). In addition, as chairman of the Education Committee of the Osteosynthesis and Trauma Care (OTC) foundation, he is closely involved in the training of orthopedic surgeons and general surgeons in the field of fracture treatment.
