Sylvia Verbanck was born in Ghent, Belgium, in 1964. She received her M.Sc. degree in physics from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), Brussels, Belgium, in 1986. She went on to obtain a B.Sc. degree in engineering architecture and a Ph.D. degree in the study of the mammalian lung on earth and in microgravity, in a collaboration between VUB, Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB), Brussels, and the University of California San Diego (UCSD), San Diego, CA, USA., Her research interests include the development of noninvasive lung function testing, finding a middle ground between the complexity of lung function indices offered by lung simulation, and feasibility in the clinic
