Suzanne Jan De Beur MD

Suzanne Jan de Beur, M.D., is the Gerald D. Aurbach Professor of Endocrinology and Chief of the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. She earned her undergraduate degree from Cornell University and her medical degree from Weill Cornell Medical College, followed by the Osler Medical Residency Program at The Johns Hopkins Hospital and a fellowship in Endocrinology and Metabolism at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

As a physician-scientist and practicing endocrinologist, Dr. Jan de Beur’s clinical and research efforts focus on rare and metabolic bone diseases. Her work bridges basic science and clinical application, contributing to the identification and molecular characterization of disorders of mineral metabolism, including pseudohypoparathyroidism, progressive osseous heteroplasia, and tumor-induced osteomalacia. Her research has helped drive the development of novel therapies for conditions such as X-linked hypophosphatemia, tumor-induced osteomalacia, and osteogenesis imperfecta.

An internationally recognized expert in osteoporosis and rare bone disorders, Dr. Jan de Beur has played a key role in shaping clinical guidelines for their management. She has served as Associate Editor for Primer on the Metabolic Bone Diseases and Disorders of Mineral Metabolism and JBMR Plus. She is a Past President and Fellow of the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research (ASBMR), Past President of Advances in Mineral Metabolism, and an elected member of the Association of Osteobiology. Her contributions have been recognized with the Shirley Hohl Award and the Boy Frame Award from ASBMR.
