Susumu Seino

Prof. Susumu Seino, head of Division of Diabetes and Endocrinology and Division of Cellular and Molecular Medicine, Kobe University Graduate School of Medicine, was awarded the 4th Albert Renold Prize at the 46th meeting of European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD), held at Stockholm, Sweden (20-24, September, 2010). He discovered the structure of the ATP-sensitive K+ channel, which led to new understanding of the ion channel in many tissues including beta cells in the islet of pancreas and the cardiac muscles.
The aim of the Albert Renold Prize and Lecture is to recognize an individual's outstanding contribution to the advancement of knowledge in the field of research on the islet of Langerhans. On September 21 in 2010, he gave the 4th Albert Renold Lecture, titled as 'The cell signalling in insulin secretion: a story of molecular targets of ATP, cAMP and sulfonylurea'. Prof. Seino is the first winner of this award outside of Europe. The Albert Renold Prize and Lecture honours the memory of A. Renold, the distinguished diabetologist and researcher. Prof. Seino is the first winner from outside of Europe.
