Dr. Sukhinder is a Professor in Biochemistry, with a cross-appointment in the Faculty of Medicine, at the Memorial University of Newfoundland. She is also an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Applied Human Nutrition, Mount Saint Vincent University, Canada. The main focus of her research is to investigate how nutrients, specifically dietary fats, and fatty acids, regulate metabolic pathways to prevent the onset of cardiovascular disease, obesity/diabetes, and to maintain brain health.

Her research group investigates the role of maternal dietary fats and over-nutrition during pregnancy, and how it impacts offspring metabolism to predispose them to a higher risk of diseases in later life. In addition to basic sciences research, she collaborates with clinician-scientists to undertake translational research, using human samples. She also collaborates with the industry to explore the health benefits of marine species and develop nutraceuticals/functional foods. Her research involves both in-vivo (animal models) and in-vitro cell culture models, with a broad range of techniques involving biochemical analyses, enzyme activities, gene regulation, and omics techniques.
