Sudha Sivaram obtained a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the Birla Institute of Technology and Science in India, and a Masters in Public Health from the University of California, Los Angeles. She completed her doctoral degree at the Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health, in the department of International Health. For her doctoral work, she received a research grant from the Johns Hopkins Fogarty Program and was hosted by the Emory AIDS International Training and Research Program while she completed the write-up phase of her thesis titled, "AIDS Prevention Efforts in Rural India: Evaluating their Impact and Sustainability”(abstract).

Dr. Sivaram's initial work in public health was in the area of Child Survival, with agencies such as USAID, PLAN International, and the World Bank; more recently she has focused on reproductive health programs in general, and HIV/AIDS prevention programs in particular. She has been involved in project planning, project management, and community-based research in rural AIDS prevention projects, primarily in South Asia, and particularly in rural India.

Dr. Sivaram is currently a research faculty member in the Department of Epidemiology at the Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health. She is the Project Director for the Chennai, India site of a multi-site HIV/STD Prevention Trial being funded by the National Institute of Mental Health.
