Dr Stuart Tangye is an NHMRC-funded Principal Research Fellow, Head of the Immunology Division at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research, and a Professor in the Faculty Medicine, University of NSW. After completing his PhD in 1995 he undertook postdoctoral training at the DNAX Research Institute for Molecular and Cellular Biology in Palo Alto California, USA in the laboratories of Drs. Jan de Vries, Joe Phillips and Lewis Lanier. It was during this time that his passion for human immunology, cell biology and immune deficiencies was sparked. He returned to Australia in 2000 to work with Dr Phil Hodgkin at the Centenary Institute of Cancer Medicine and Cell Biology (University of Sydney).
He established his own research lab in 2002, was recruited to the Garvan Institute in 2006, and appointed to Division Head in 2015. His research interests focus on the biology of human lymphocytes in health and disease, and elucidating mechanisms whereby defects in signaling, activation and function underlie the development and clinical features of immune dysregulatory conditions. This is achieved by studying lymphocyte development, signaling, differentiation and effector function in patients with diseases resulting from monogenic mutations in key regulators of immune responses, as well as in corresponding animal models of these human conditions.
He has been funded by fellowships and project and program grants awarded by the NHMRC, Cancer Council NSW, NIH, XLP Research Trust and Association for International Cancer Research. Since 1995, he has published >1550 peer-reviewed articles and invited reviews. In 2011, he received the Gottschalk Medal from the Australian Academy of Sciences, which recognises “outstanding research in the medical sciences by scientists no more than 40 years of age”, and in 2015 was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to undertake sabbatical at Rockefeller University. When he is not at work, he enjoys surfing, cycling, swimming and being a Dad to his three beautiful children!.
