Stuart Connolly was born in Montreal in 1949. He completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1971, majoring in philosophy and religion and a Master's degree in philosophy at Fordham University in 1973. He graduated from McGill medical school in 1977. During the next four years,

Dr. Connolly completed internal medicine and cardiology training at the University of Toronto, at St. Michael's and Toronto General Hospitals; then leaving Canada for Stanford University for a two year fellowship in cardiac electrophysiology. In 1983, Dr. Connolly returned to Canada as one of the countries few cardiac electrophysiologists at the time, beginning an Assistant Professorship at McMaster University where he was promoted to full professor.

He became the Division Director for Cardiology and Hospital Service Director in 2005, posts that he continues to hold. Dr. Connolly played a key role in developing a network of Canadian arrhythmia specialists who collaborated on several pivotal clinical trials in atrial fibrillation, anticoagulation, device and pacemaker therapy. This collaboration continues to be highly productive.

Dr. Connolly received key mentorship from Drs. John Cairns, Michael Ghent and Salim Yusuf and in turn, subsequently has played a role in the mentorship of several researchers in arrhythmia and thrombosis including Drs. Jeff Healey, Andrew Krahn and John Eikelboom.
