Dr. Stuart McPherson is a Consultant Liver Specialist who joined the Newcastle Hospitals in 2010. He is currently Head of the Department for Liver Medicine.

Stuart completed undergraduate medical training at St Andrews and Manchester Universities and subsequently undertook specialist training in Glasgow and Newcastle. In addition, he spent two years in Brisbane, Australia researching hepatitis C and fatty liver disease.

Stuart manages patients with liver disease and runs specialist clinics for viral hepatitis, fatty liver disease, and cirrhosis. In 2017 he led the team to win the prestigious Royal College of Physicians Quality Improvement Award for developing a decompensated cirrhosis care bundle that was shown to improve the care of patients with cirrhosis and is now used in most centers in the UK.Dr. McPherson is also an Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer in the Translational and Clinical Research Institute at Newcastle University. He has a strong research interest aiming to improve the care of patients with liver disease.

Stuart is actively conducting research to improve clinical care pathways for patients with viral hepatitis, cirrhosis, and fatty liver disease to identify and treat these diseases at an early stage to prevent patients from developing advanced liver disease. He has been a principal investigator for multiple clinical trials assessing new treatments for liver disease and has published more than 90 scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals.
