Dr. Stuart C. Gordon, MD, is a nationally and internationally recognized authority in diseases of the liver. His interest in hepatology was piqued during a WSUSOM fourth-year elective at the Royal Free Hospital in London, UK. After residency in Internal Medicine and fellowship in Gastroenterology, Dr. Gordon completed a fellowship in Clinical Hepatology at the University of Miami School of Medicine’s Center for Liver Diseases under Drs. Leon and Eugene Schiff. He then returned to Michigan as director of Gastroenterology-Hepatology at William Beaumont Hospital before joining the Henry Ford Health System as Director of Hepatology.
Dr. Gordon has served on several National Institutes of Health study sections, as a reviewer for Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Journal of the American Medical Association, Annals of Internal Medicine, the New England Journal of Medicine, and other publications. He has authored or coauthored over 350 papers, reviews, editorials, and book chapters, and was identified by Clarivate Analytics among the most highly cited researchers globally. He served on the editorial board of Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology. In collaboration with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, he served as the United States principal investigator of the Chronic Hepatitis Cohort Study.
Dr. Gordon is currently the national principal investigator of the U.S Fibrotic Liver Disease (FoLD) study, a large multicenter consortium that examines the epidemiology and natural history of primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) in the United States. In 2004, he was the recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award from the Wayne State University School of Medicine. In 2015, he was named a laureate of the Michigan Chapter of the American College of Physicians. In 2024, he was inducted into Hour Magazine’s Hall of Fame.
