Steven W. Cheung MD

Steven W. Cheung, MD, is a Professor and an Otologist, ear specialist and skull base surgeon in the Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery (OHNS) at the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Cheung earned his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, and he completed an internship in General Surgery at UCSF. He also completed a second year in General Surgery, a residency in Otolaryngology, a fellowship in Skull Base Surgery, and a postdoctoral research fellowship in Neurophysiology at UCSF. He is a member of the Otology, Neurotology, and Skull Base Surgery Division, where he provides medical and surgical care for patients with ear infections, hearing loss, tinnitus, and skull base tumors.
Dr. Cheung’s current research focuses on tinnitus and hearing loss. His clinical research on tinnitus is both interventional and diagnostic. Dr. Cheung is principal investigator on a NIH funded Phase I trial of deep brain stimulation (DBS) in area LCto treat troublesome tinnitus and a recently completed Department of Defense funded project on multimodal imaging of tinnitus.
Dr. Cheung has been invited to over 100 presentations both internationally and nationally. He has also published and co-authored over 90 articles, and currently serves as a scientific reviewer for Otology & Neurotology, OHNS, Neuroscience, Laryngoscope, Neurosurgery, Audiology & Neurotology, and Frontiers of Neuroscience
