Dr. Steven F. Schutzer was born in The Bronx, New York, and attended local city schools. He graduated with Honors from Union College 1974 where he played intercollegiate lacrosse and wrestling. He then went on to the University of Virginia School of Medicine where he received his Medical Degree in 1978. Dr. Schutzer was a Lieutenant in the Medical Corps of the United States Navy between 1979 and 1981 and received the Meritorious Service Award. He did his Surgical Internship and one year of additional General Surgery at the University of Rochester, Strong Memorial Hospital, and then completed his Orthopedic Residency at the University of Connecticut in 1985. He was an AO Trauma Fellow in Berne, Switzerland, and subsequently did a second Fellowship in Adult Hip and Reconstructive Surgery at the Massachusetts General Hospital where he was also an Instructor in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery from 1985 to 1986.

Dr. Schutzer entered practice with Orthopedic Associates of Hartford, P.C., in July 1986 and is currently on the staff of St. Francis Hospital, Hartford Hospital and the University of Connecticut, John Dempsey Hospital. He is a Clinical Associate Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Connecticut. His current clinical interests are in adult arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery of the hip and knee. He received his Board Certification in 1989, re-certified in 1997 and then again in 2007.

Dr. Schutzer is a Founding member and Medical Director of the Connecticut Joint Replacement Institute (CJRI) at St. Francis Hospital which opened in July 2007. He is an investigator on several ongoing research projects related to Total Joint Replacement. He lectures Nationally on new models of creating and delivering high value care for Total Joint Replacement patients.

Dr. Schutzer is a member of numerous National and Regional orthopedic specialty societies including the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons, and the Orthopedic Research Society. He is on the Editorial Staff of the Journal of Arthroplasty.

Dr. Schutzer has been involved in numerous community activities. He was the team physician for the Windsor High School Athletic Department for nearly10 years He was the company physician for the Hartford Ballet and Dance Connecticut and has maintained his interest in caring for dancers and their injuries. He was a Big Brother mentor between 2001 - 2011 and received the exceptional volunteer award from Nutmeg Big Brothers/Big Sisters in 2006. He is also a member of

Dr. Schutzer serves on the Board of the Centers for Neurological Restoration (CNR), The Connecticut Joint Replacement Surgeons, LLC and DancEnlight (serves as President of the Board). He is a Corporator at both Hartford Hospital and St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center.

In addition to his academic and community work, Dr. Schutzer has numerous outside interests. He holds a third degree black belt in Hapkido and Tae Kwon Do. He is an avid fisherman and outdoorsman. He and his wife study Chinese calligraphy. Dr. Schutzer enjoys riding his motorcycles, working with his tractor, water skiing, playing guitar and studying Asian philosophy. He is very happily married and has two wonderful sons.
