Steven A. Gunderson DO, FACA, DABA, CASC

Dr. Gunderson is the Chief Executive Officer and Administrative Medical Director of Rockford Ambulatory Surgery Center, a five operating room, two procedure room freestanding surgery center in Rockford, Illinois. He has been involved in healthcare for over 30 years. He received his bachelor’s degree from Drake University and attended medical school at Des Moines University-Osteopathic Medical Center as a U.S. Navy Health Professions Scholarship recipient. He completed a rotating internship in Cleveland, Ohio then served in the U.S. Navy Medical Corps as a general medical officer. After serving in Navy he completed an Anesthesiology residency at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

Dr. Gunderson has been a member of Rockford Anesthesiologists Associated since 1984 and has held positions on the Board of Directors and Executive Committee. He has served as Vice Chairman and Chairman of the Department of Anesthesia at Swedish American Health System where he was on numerous hospital committees prior to developing Rockford Ambulatory Surgery Center. He has been active on the Medical Advisory Committee and Executive Committee of Rockford Ambulatory Surgery Center since 1994.

Dr. Gunderson has been an active participant in the ambulatory surgery center industry. He is a surveyor for the AAAHC, a life member of the American College of Physician Executives, past Vice President, and Secretary of the Illinois Freestanding Surgery Center Association. He has served on the Board of Directors of the Federated Ambulatory Surgery Association, the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care, Board of Ambulatory Surgery Certification and currently sits on the State of Illinois Ambulatory Surgical Treatment Center Licensing Board, and the Medical Executive Committee of the University of Illinois College of Medicine.

Physician activities include the board of directors of the Illinois Society of Anesthesiologists, Diplomat of the American Board of Anesthesiologists, Fellow American College of Anesthesiologists, and Diplomat of the American Academy of Pain Management. Dr. Gunderson is a Fellow of the International College of Surgeons and Clinical Assistant Professor University of Illinois College of Medicine.
