Steven A. Goldstein MD, FACC, FASE

Steven Goldstein, MD, FACC, FASE, is a senior attending cardiologist at MedStar Washington Hospital Center’s Heart & Vascular Institute. He has been with MedStar for more than 40 years, contributing to the well-being of his patients and the community. He is currently active in teaching and mentoring cardiology fellows in training. Previously, Dr. Goldstein practiced as a cardiologist and served as Director of the Non-invasive Laboratory at MedStar Heart & Vascular Institute. Now, Dr. Goldstein dedicates his practice to performing a special type of echocardiogram procedure called transesophageal echocardiography, or TEE. TEE is an imaging technology used to help guide interventional cardiologists during procedures such as placement of the WATCHMAN device; valvular replacements, like transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) and transcatheter mitral valve replacement (TMVR); and balloon mitral valvuloplasty for the treatment of rheumatic heart disease. MedStar has longstanding experience using TEE to guide balloon mitral valvuloplasty for rheumatic mitral stenosis, as it was the first facility in the U.S. to use this technique routinely. In addition to performing the TEE procedure, part of Dr. Goldstein’s practice focuses on interpreting transthoracic and stress echocardiograms and communicating these results to referring physicians.

Dr. Goldstein received his medical degree from Vanderbilt University before completing residency training in internal medicine at Cleveland Metropolitan General Hospital, where he served as Chief Resident. He then traveled to London, where he studied under renowned cardiologists at St. George’s Hospital and the National Heart Hospital, sparking his passion for echocardiography. Finally, he completed his fellowship training in cardiology at Georgetown University Medical School. Dr. Goldstein has won various awards, including the Physician Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Society of Echocardiography, for his dedication, contributions, and leadership in the field of cardiovascular ultrasound. He actively speaks nationally and internationally on current topics in the field of cardiovascular ultrasound and reviews manuscripts for multiple journals, including Heart, Echocardiography, The Journal of the American Society of Echocardiography, The Journal of the American College of Cardiology, JACC: Cardiovascular Imaging, and The American Journal of Cardiology.
