Steve Robertson PhD

Steve is Professor of Men, Gender and Health and Co-Director of The Centre for Men's Health. he is also Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Men's Health.

Steve's main research interests are on social theories of gender and masculinities and their application to aspects of health and illness. His work covers a wide range of topics including: masculinities and health promotion; men's mental health promotion; the sociology of (male) bodies (including men and disability studies); fathers and fatherhood; rural masculinities and health; and men's engagement (or not) with health services. He had twenty years clinical and community experience as a nurse and health visitor in the UK National Health Service, before commencing a career in research in 1999.

He has significant experience evaluating men's health and other community based interventions, often using realistic evaluation approaches. He has expertise in a range of qualitative methods and a particular interest in abductive reasoning and critical realist inspired methodologies.
