Dr. Stephen Neidle is a graduate of the Chemistry Department at Imperial College London. He was appointed to the Chair of Biophysics at the Institute of Cancer Research in 1990 (where he was also Academic Dean 1997-2002) and moved to the newly-established Chair of Chemical Biology at the School of Pharmacy, University College London in 2002. He is now an Emeritus Professor at UCL.

Stephen Neidle’s current research interests are primarily in the chemistry and biology of nucleic acid structure and recognition by small molecules, and in exploiting this information for the rational design and discovery of novel therapeutic agents. He has been one of the founders of the study of G-quadruplex nucleic acids, especially focussing on their structure and recognition as novel drug targets, using an integrated multi-disciplinary structural, chemical and biological approach. He has published over 500 papers and reviews, 14 patents, and has written and edited a number of books on nucleic acids, drug-DNA interactions and cancer drug discovery.

His current h index is 97. He has received a number of awards for his work, including the Sosnovsky Prize and the Interdisciplinary Award of the Royal Society of Chemistry, and the Aventis prize of the Societé de Chimie Therapeutique, France. Stephen Neidle is a strong believer in the ability of academic drug discovery to play a major role in discovering new therapies for unmet clinical needs. He has been involved in the discovery of several experimental and clinically-approved drugs, including abiraterone, used in the treatment of advanced prostate cancer and more recently a new antibiotic, ridinilazole, which will shortly be entering human Phase III clinical trials.
