Stephen E. Hawes is a Professor in the Department of Epidemiology in the School of Public Health at the University of Washington (UW) and has an adjunct appointment in the Department of Global Health. He Served as Chair of the Epidemiology Department from 2018 to 2023. He has graduate degrees in biostatistics and epidemiology, and has taught numerous undergraduate and graduate courses in applied epidemiology. His primary research interests are in human papillomavirus (HPV) and other sexually transmitted infections, cervical and anal cancer, and HIV, and he has more than 25 years of research experience conducting observational cohort studies and clinical trials in Senegal, West Africa, as well as in Seattle. He is Director of the UW Strategic Analysis, Research and Training (START) Center, a Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation-funded research and training center within the Department of Global Health, and has conducted numerous global mentoring and scientific research workshops in Kenya, Namibia, Peru, Vietnam, and Cambodia.
