Dr. Stephen Francis Burns is an Associate Professor within the Physical Education and Sports Science Academic Group, at the National Institute of Education at Nanyang Technological University (NTU). He holds a PhD in Exercise Physiology from Loughborough University in the U.K. and has previously held posts at the University of Texas at El Paso and the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh in the U.S. before coming to NTU. He is a member of the American College of Sports Medicine. He serves as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Exercise Science & Fitness; as a member of the Editorial Board for the International Journal of Obesity and the International Journal of Sport Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism; and as a Review Editor for Frontiers in Nutrition, and for Frontiers in Sports and Active Living.
Dr. Burns’ research interests examine how physical activity can mitigate risk factors for cardiometabolic diseases and more recently he has conducted research into areas of sports nutrition, including the role of dietary supplements – caffeine and nitrate – in improving sports performance and the detrimental effects of low energy availability on performing sport. Internationally, Dr Burns collaborates with colleagues from the UK, the US, Japan, Taiwan, and New Zealand.
