Mr Stephen D. Reimers received both his BS Degree and MS Degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1969 from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) at Cambridge, MA. He joined the US Navy and for 4 years he provided engineering support at the US Navy Experimental Diving Unit, in Washington DC. US Navy qualified him as a Salvage Diving Officer & Saturation Diving Officer. He received Navy qualification in Scuba, Hardhat Diving Dress and Mark 10 Closed Circuit Underwater Breathing Apparatus. He was Project Officer for performing equipment evaluations on Scuba regulators, underwater breathing apparatus systems, diving helmets, and portable recompression chambers. He served as Equipment Manager for US Navy/Makai Range Dive Series that involved open sea saturation dives with a bottom sitting habitat.
In 1975, Mr Reimers established Reimers Engineering which specialized in design, construction and engineering support of clinical hyperbaric systems. He was President and owner of four companies since 1975: Reimers Consultants, Reimers Engineering, Inc., Reimers Systems, Inc., and Hyperbaric Clearinghouse, Inc.
Mr Reimers is very active in developing national safety standards for hyperbaric systems. He a 29+ year member on ASME -PVHO Committee; 15+ year Chairman of ASME-PVHO Piping Committee; 13+ year member of NFPA Sub-committee on Hyperbaric and Hypobaric Facilities; 18+ year member of UHMS Safety Committee and past Chairman of same; and a member of the Committee for Consensus Standards for Commercial Diving.
He has published over 50 journal articles and test reports, and has written 3 textbook chapters. He is a frequent lecturer on hyperbaric safety topics. He has lectured in International ATMO Hyperbaric Chamber Safety Courses since 1997 and has been a senior faculty member of the Hyperbaric Safety Director Training Course since it began in 2001.
