Dr. Schmechel is chief of pathology at Harborview Medical Center, director of cytopathology and staff surgical pathologist at UW Medicine. He is a UW associate professor of pathology. His clinical areas of interest include cytopathology and genitourinary pathology.

He also conducts research to try to improve the diagnostic and prognostic value of magnetic resonance imaging in assessing prostate cancer preoperatively. This work involves the identification and use of biomarkers of aggressive prostate cancer behavior. He also runs a research core facility called Northwest BioTrust, which provides patient consenting, and tissue and fluid specimen collection, for numerous research programs across UW and other research institutions.

Dr. Schmechel earned his bachelor's degree from Carroll College in Montana and his M.D. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. He first came to UW as a resident in laboratory medicine and pathology. He was on faculty at the University of Minnesota for 6 years prior to returning to UW in 2012.
