Stephan Menne received his Ph.D. in Virology and Immunology at the University of Duisburg-Essen in Germany, where his research concentrated on the immunopathogenesis of hepatitis B virus (HBV) using woodchucks and woodchuck hepatitis virus as a surrogate animal model. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Cornell University (Ithaca, NY) and was appointed thereafter to Assistant Professor. During that time he extended his studies and became involved in the testing of the safety, efficacy and innate and adaptive immune responses mediated by experimental drugs against HBV in woodchucks. Following his appointment to Associate Professor at Georgetown University Medical Center (Washington, DC) in 2010, he is now responsible for the testing of new HBV therapeutics in woodchucks that is funded by the Division of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (DMID) of NIAID/NIH.
