Dr. Esser graduated from the University of Aachen, Germany in 1988 with a Medical Degree and medical doctorate, followed by extended clinical experience in surgery, plastic Surgery, emergency medicine, travel medicine, sports medicine and family medicine at the Central Military Hospital Koblenz, Germany and other large hospitals in Germany including the UNTAC Field Hospital Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Dr. Esser was also trained in occupational health. He also holds a Master of Public Health and a Master of Business Administration.
Dr. Esser has published and given a large number of articles, lectures, presentations and seminaries on pain management, occupational health, travel medicine, travel risk prevention, and medical marketing. Dr. Esser worked with the German armed forces medical corps and several public and private health providers in Germany and other countries like Algeria, Cambodia, Colombia.

His current position with International SOS and experience covers a variety of topics, including occupational health, pandemic planning and medical requirements for remote site locations, and includes countries such as Albania, Algeria, Burkina Faso, China, Equatorial Guinea, Egypt, Guinea, India, Indonesia, Israel, Mali, Morocco, Romania, Saudi Arabia, Turkmenistan, Turkey, Zimbabwe and others.
Dr Esser also leads International SOS’ Frankfurt Assistance center, from where around 1o,ooo medical cases are handled including around 100 evacuations and repatriations are managed every year. International SOS provides world-wide around 13,300 evacuations and repatriations. Assistance medicine takes care for patients travelling or living abroad and includes advise and referral, out-patient and in-patient management as well as evacuations and repatriations.
