Stefan Engelter is Professor of Neurology with a special interest in Stroke including acute management, prevention and neurorehabilitation. Currently he serves as Chair Rehabilitation at the University Center for Medicine of Ageing & Rehabilitation Felix-Platter-Hospital Basel, University of Basel and as Head Stroke pathway of the Stroke Center in the Department of Neurology, University Hospital Basel.
He is president of the Swiss Certification Committee for Stroke Units and Stroke Centers and member of the Stroke Unit certification committee of the European Stroke Organization (ESO). His scientific activities are focused on cervical artery dissection (he is founding member of the CADISP-consortium [Cervical Artery Dissection and Ischemic Stroke Patients], and leads the randomized controlled TREAT-CAD-Study (Biomarkers and Antithrombotic Treatment in Cervical Artery Dissection Study), evidence-based therapy (he (co)authored Cochrane Reviews about anticoagulants versus antiplatelets in internal carotid artery dissection, antiplatelets after thrombendarterectomy etc), thrombolysis (he co-initiated TriSP, a multicenter registry about Thrombolyis in Stroke Patients), stroke genetics, stroke in the elderly, and more recently stroke rehabilitation as well as direct oral anticoagulants and intracranial hemorrhage. He initiated NOACISP, as academic research collaboration about Non-Vitamin –K Oral Anticoagulants In Stroke Patients.
