He joined Rutgers in 1986 in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. In 1988, with his research interests leaning towards medical imaging, he moved to the Department of Biomedical Engineering, maintaining graduate faculty appointments in Electrical and Computer Engineering, and an appointment in Computer Science.

Dr. Dunn was named a Fellow of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) in 2004 for his work in digital subtraction radiography. He has written three books, edited two volumes, written 5 book chapters, has 76 refereed publications, 75 conference papers, and 81 conference abstracts. He has mentored 14 Ph.D. students, 23 M.S. Students, and many undergraduate students. The dissertation of one doctoral student led to a best clinical science paper in the Journal Academic Radiology (2003). He has served on thesis committees in all of these areas as well as Food Science and Environmental Science.

Professor Dunn has served the professional community. From 1990-1998, he was co-chair of a series of symposia on Digital Imaging in Dental Radiology; he served as an officer in the International Associate of Dental Research (1991-94), the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology (1995-98) and the IEEE Society for Social Implications of Technology (1999-2002). He was co-organizer of an NSF-funded workshop on Nanotechnology in Biology held in October 2008. Professor Dunn was the founding editor-in-chief of the Journal of Applied Packaging Research (2005).
