Dr. Soundarya Gowda, M.D., is a board-certified neurologist with Neurological Associates in Richmond, Virginia. Dr. Gowda earned her medical doctorate at Jagadguru Jayadeva Murugarajendra Medical College (JJMMC) in Davangere, India. Following medical school, she completed her internship in the Department of Internal Medicine at Long Island College Hospital in Brooklyn. Dr. Gowda then fulfilled her residency in the Department of Neurology at Virginia Commonwealth University Health System, where she also served as chief resident. Following her residency, Dr. Gowda remained at VCU to complete a fellowship program in clinical neurophysiology.
Dr. Gowda is board-certified in neurology, neurophysiology, and epilepsy by the American Board of Psychiatry & Neurology. She is considered an expert in clinical neurophysiological aspects of epilepsy and has performed extensive research on the surgical and pharmacological management of status epilepticus. Dr. Gowda is highly experienced in neuromodulation therapies for treating epilepsy, including Vagal Nerve Stimulation (VNS), Responsive Neurostimulation for Seizures (RNS®), and deep brain stimulation (DBS).
Her care philosophy centers on making a difference in the quality of life for her patients with epilepsy, understanding the medical, social, and financial impacts that the condition may present. When not seeing patients, Dr. Gowda has served as an Associate Professor of Neurology at both VTSOM/Carilion Clinic, in Roanoke, and at VCU, where she has been awarded their Outstanding Neurology Teacher three times. She also enjoys mentoring current neurology interns and residents.
