Dr. Tsimikas is a Professor of Medicine and Director of Vascular Medicine at the University of California San Diego. He is trained in internal medicine, general and interventional cardiology, and vascular medicine. He also has oversees a translational cardiovascular research laboratory focused on “biotheranostics” - biomarkers, therapeutics, and molecular imaging. He has a dual appointment as UCSD and as Cardiovascular Franchise Leader and Vice President of Clinical Development at Ionis Pharmaceuticals.
He obtained his MD degree in 1988 from the University of Massachusetts Medical School and completed his Internal Medicine training at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in 1991. He completed separate fellowships in Cardiovascular Disease, Atherosclerosis, and Interventional Cardiology at the University of California San Diego from 1992-1997.
Dr. Tsimikas has been Deputy Editor/Associate Editor for JACC from 2002-2014 Associate Editor for JACC Interventions from 2010-2014. Dr. Tsimikas has published over 280 articles and book chapters, including in NEJM, Lancet, Cell, Nature, JACC, JCI, Circulation, Circ Res, ATVB, and EHJ. He is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, the American Heart Association, and the Society for Cardiac Angiography and Interventions.
