Professor de Rooij is Professor of Internal Medicine and Geriatrics, University Medical Center Groningen. Professor de Rooij has initiated and established a managed care network for Transitional Care for over 50 Dutch hospitals and for Hospital at Home care in Netherlands, in which internists, geriatricians, general practitioners and home care organisations collaborate to improve the care for elderly patients with acute care needs and which forms a unique platform for health services research. She initiated a researchline which performs landmark clinical studies in vulnerable, frail patients and whose outcomes have led to the adjustment of the standard treatment of elderly patients with dementia and delirium. She co-authored > 220 peer-reviewed publications. Under her guidance 25 PhD theses were completed. She developed a number of internationally awarded serious games. She served as a reviewer for the Horizon2020 program.

She serves and has served on various national and international advisory and program committees (eg. Dutch society of Internal Medicine, Dutch Society of geriatrics, Royal Dutch College of Physicians, Dutch National Institute of Quality of Care, ZonMw, European Delirium Association, etc.). She is co-authored and edited several books. Professor de Rooij is past President of the Dutch Society of Internal Medicine (2013 – 2016). She is head of the University Center of Geriatric Medicine and director of the Alzheimer Center Groningen. Since 2016 she is also deputy head of the department of Internal Medicine of the UMCG. She combines her management position with clinical research, seeing patients during consulting hours, academic research and mentoring PhD students and training of residents in Internal Medicine and in Geriatrics.
