Sonia Friedman, MD is the Chief of Gastroenterology at the Tufts Medical Center and Professor of Medicine at the Tufts University School of Medicine. Dr. Friedman completed her undergraduate degree in biology at Stanford University in California and her medical degree at Yale University School of Medicine. She did her medical internship and residency at the University of Pennsylvania and her gastroenterology fellowship at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City. She specialized in IBD during her fellowship at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
Dr. Friedman’s research interests include pregnancy, fertility, and sexual function in men and women with IBD. Her clinical interests are the care of patients with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. She specializes in the management of pregnancy and IBD.
Dr. Friedman is a frequent speaker and an invited regional and national lecturer on the management of inflammatory bowel disease. She has authored or co-authored papers on cancer in Crohn’s disease, adherence to surveillance colonoscopy, assisted reproductive technology in women with IBD, effects of medications taken during conception and pregnancy in patients with IBD, and sexual function in IBD. She has written review articles and chapters on various aspects of IBD, including the IBD chapter in Harrison’s Principles of Internal Medicine. Her publications include original articles, reviews, and chapters in Gastroenterology, Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology, American Journal of Gastroenterology, Inflammatory Bowel Diseases, and the Gastroenterology Clinics of North America.
