Dr. Simon LF Walsh is a Consultant Thoracic Radiologist and NIHR Clinician Scientist working at the National Heart and Lung Institute, Imperial College, London. He specializes in the imaging of diffuse lung diseases. He is a software developer and machine learning scientist and applies these skills to his research interests in medicine. His specific research interests include the staging of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, the role of multidisciplinary evaluation in the setting of diffuse lung disease, computer-aided image analysis, machine learning, and computer vision. His machine-learning research involves collaborations with the Biomedical Imaging Analysis Group at Imperial College and the Centre for Artificial Intelligence at University College London. Dr. Walsh regularly lectures on the imaging of diffuse lung diseases, both nationally and internationally, and has over 80 publications on this subject, including articles in several high-impact respiratory journals, such as Lancet Respiratory Medicine, European Respiratory Journal, and Thorax. He is an Associate Editor of the European Respiratory Journal, on the Editorial Board of Chest, Academic Imaging Lead for the Australian IPF Registry and the EMPIRE registry, and is the Cofounder and Imaging Lead for a global imaging repository for fibrotic lung disease imaging aimed at promoting machine learning research in pulmonary fibrosis, called The Open Source Imaging Consortium. Dr. Walsh is a member of the ATS/ERS/JRS/ALAT IPF Guideline Committee and ATS/ERS/JRS/ALAT Chronic Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis Guideline Committee.
