Simon Howell received his undergraduate training in medicine in Cambridge and London and qualified from St. Bartholomew’s Hospital, London in 1984. In Between 1992 and 1997 he was Clinical Lecturer in Anaesthetics in the Nuffield Department of Anaesthetics in Oxford. In 1995 and 1996 he studied Epidemiology at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. He moved to the University of Bristol 1998 and to the University of Leeds as a Senior Lecturer in Anaesthesia in 2001.
He has conducted research into perioperative myocardial ischaemia and into the epidemiology of perioperative cardiovascular complications. His current research interests include perioperative myocardial injury, perioperative risk stratification using exercise testing, outcomes after vascular surgery, and preoperative optimisation.
