Shernan G. Holtan MD

Dr. Shernan G. Holtan, MD, is a hematologist-oncologist and physician-scientist specializing in blood and marrow transplantation, cellular immunotherapy, and immune-mediated complications of cancer treatment. She serves as Chief of the Blood and Marrow Transplantation Section and Professor of Medicine at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center, as well as Professor of Medicine at the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, University at Buffalo.

Dr. Holtan's research focuses on advancing regenerative supportive therapies and innovative monitoring strategies for patients undergoing stem cell transplantation and cellular therapies. Her work has significantly improved the understanding, prevention, and treatment of graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), including the development of the biomarker amphiregulin (AREG) for monitoring severe GVHD and leadership in multicenter clinical trials that helped establish post-transplant cyclophosphamide-based prophylaxis as a new standard of care.

A recognized leader in hematologic oncology and transplantation, Dr. Holtan has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and serves as the principal investigator for multiple clinical and translational research studies. Her clinical interests include blood and marrow transplantation, cellular immunotherapy, regenerative medicine, relapse prevention, and supportive care, with a commitment to improving both survival and quality of life for patients with hematologic malignancies through innovative, evidence-based therapies.
