Shelby Johnson, Ph.D. has a diverse work experience in the field of scientific research and teaching. Shelby is currently working as a Scientist I at Sage Therapeutics since March 2022. Prior to this, they were also a Scientist I, Consultant at the same company from November 2021 to March 2022. Before joining Sage Therapeutics, Shelby worked as a Post Doctoral Associate at the University of Massachusetts Medical School from April 2020 to October 2021. During their tenure, they focused on investigating somatic mutations in human postmortem brain tissue and human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived dopaminergic neuronal models of Parkinson's disease.

Shelby's earlier experiences include being a Graduate Research Assistant at the University of Rhode Island from May 2016 to April 2020. In this role, they were mentored by Dr. Paula Grammas and Dr. Navindra Seeram and conducted research on natural products and pharmaceuticals targeting neuroinflammation in neurodegenerative diseases. Shelby also served as a Graduate Teaching Assistant from January 2017 to May 2019 and a Chemical Inventory Associate from June 2016 to January 2017 at the same university. Outside of academia, Shelby has worked as an Assistant Hockey Coach for the women's ice hockey team at Salve Regina University from October 2019 to March 2020. Shelby was also an Adjunct Faculty member at the university for a short period from September 2018 to December 2018.

During their undergraduate studies, Shelby gained research experience as a Research Associate at the Hydroponics Lab at Salve Regina University from November 2013 to May 2016. Shelby was responsible for the daily maintenance of the laboratory and conducted projects focused on identifying bioactive components of hydroponically grown plants. Additionally, they worked as a Research Summer Intern at the University of Rhode Island in the summer of 2015, where they learned skills in natural product extraction and isolation, HPLC, cell culture, and enzymatic assays under the mentorship of Dr. Navindra Seeram in the Bioactive Botanical Research Laboratory.

Shelby Johnson, PhD, obtained a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in the Interdisciplinary Neuroscience Program from the University of Rhode Island, with a duration of study from 2016 to 2020. Prior to that, they completed their Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree, majoring in Biology and minoring in Chemistry, from Salve Regina University during the period of 2012 to 2016. Shelby's high school education was completed at Vermont Academy from 2008 to 2012.
