Shannon Phillips MD, MPH

Shannon Phillips, MD, MPH, is a General Pediatrician and Pediatric Hospitalist who has always been based in an academic setting. Prior to joining Cleveland Clinic, she had appointments in pediatrics at Indiana University School of Medicine (James Whitcomb Riley Children’s Hospital) and University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine (Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia).

Dr. Phillips practiced the first nine years of her career as a general pediatrician in both inpatient and outpatient settings, but since that time focuses her clinical practice on inpatient medicine. Particular clinical interests include the inpatient care of medically complex children and family-centered approach to patient care. She developed the first pediatric hospitalist program at Methodist Hospital/Riley Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis and subsequently joined Cleveland Clinic Children’s Hospital in 2004 to develop and lead a pediatric hospitalist medicine program.

Dr. Phillips served as Interim Chair of the Department of General Pediatrics at Cleveland Clinic Children’s Hospital, a department that encompasses inpatient medicine, ambulatory primary care and urgent care in the emergency setting, in 2006-2007.

Her special interests professionally include patient safety and quality measurement in healthcare. Dr. Phillips has dual appointments in the Pediatric Institute and the Quality and Patient Safety Institute and is on the faculty of the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University. She led Children’s Hospital patient safety initiatives from 2006-2009. In 2007, Dr. Phillips was appointed as the first Patient Safety Officer for Cleveland Clinic. In that role, she is responsible for building an organizational culture of patient safety and implementing strategies to reduce medical error and harm in order to improve the quality of care at Cleveland Clinic. Since 2010, Dr. Phillips is also the Quality Officer for Cleveland Clinic.
